NUMMI Closes for Good
April 1, 2010 by Colin Bird

After 25 years, the joint venture experiment between two of the world’s largest car companies comes to an end.
Nearly 5,000 well paying California jobs are directly affected by the plant’s closure today. Over the coming months, anywhere from 18,000 to 50,000 jobs could be lost across California, due to NUMMI’s closure.
NUMMI also marks the end of car assembly on the West Coast and will be the first plant closure for Toyota in the company’s 73 year history.
As we reach this historic occasion, Justin Loyear and I have a discussion about NUMMI. Justin Loyear is an editor and moderator of CheersandGears.com and a native to northern California’s Central Valley – an area which many NUMMI workers call home.
In this special edition podcast, we discuss the This American Life episode on NUMMI, the history of the plant and whether or not the plant was a failure for GM and Toyota.
