Toyota Dealers Picketed by UAW Members
July 14, 2010 by William MaleyToyota dealers in California and New York are experiencing groups of picketers outside their lots. They’re not protesting about the Toyota recalls. The group made up of members and retirees of the UAW is picketing Toyota dealers about the closing of NUMMI (New United Motor Manufacturing Inc.) in California and pressuring Toyota to have their other U.S. plants unionize. The idea of picketing Toyota dealers was revealed last month by the UAW’s new president Bob King. Cody Lusk, president of the American International Automobile Dealers Association said in a statement about the picketing,
“A picket line will only hurt the dealership, its employees and the community it serves. An assault on America’s auto retail industry will only serve to highlight the disconnect between the UAW and reality.â€
King didn’t say which dealers were picketed or how the picketing was organized.
